BIOGRAPHY

Born in Sweden, Karin lived for part of her childhood in the Middle East and Africa. She studied the violin at the Royal Danish Academy and the Jerusalem Academy of Music, continuing with viola studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire. She now enjoys a versatile career in the UK and beyond as a recitalist, chamber musician and teacher alongside freelance work with London Orchestras.

In 2011-2016 Karin served as Artistic Director of Chamber Music in Little Venice; a Chamber Music series in central London which she co-founded in 2011 where she collaborated with many distinguished musicians. She is a founder member of the Little Venice Ensemble; a collective of internationally acclaimed musicians in Sweden and the UK. The group’s first CD “Deck the Halls” with the Swedish Soprano Susanna Andersson was released by Stone Records in 2014. Praised by music critics and audiences alike, the disc was awarded five stars by the Sunday Mirror and named runner up Christmas Disc of the Year by Classic FM.

As a chamber musician, Karin has collaborated with many distinguished musicians, including the flautist Wissam Boustany and pianist Aleksander Szram in repertoire for flute, viola and piano. More recently she has taken an interest in conducting, which she is now studying with Peter Stark and Hilary Davan-Wetton.

Fascinated by the neurological and psychological benefits of learning a musical instrument at any age, Karin is dedicated to teaching pupils of all ages and abilities. She teaches the violin and the viola at two leading UK independent schools, online at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music (Gaza branch) through the charity Palmusic UK, as well as in her private studio at home where she has worked with pupils aged from five to 92. She has recorded training videos for ABRSM Teaching Notes Live, Initial Grade Viola for the ABRSM 2020-2023 Syllabus and Solo Time for viola for Oxford University Press. In December 2021, she served as an international Jury Member at the Palestine National Music Competition.

Growing up on two sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as well as in East Africa has taught Karin to value the importance of music as a bridge-builder in political conflict and the hope, joy, pleasure and solace it can give those who learn to play and those who listen. For these reasons she is passionate about using my musical skills to make lives better in a non-political way; be it through fundraising for charity by performing or through teaching.

Karin is also a visual artist and designer. During her violin studies in Jerusalem, she studied drawing and lithography at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. She has exhibited work in the UK and Sweden and has now launched Inspired by Music; a new designer brand for musicians and music lovers, where she has taken inspiration from her musical colleagues.

Karin plays on a viola made for her by David Milward in 2019.
